Nick Clegg Volunteers to Get Hands Dirty in Aid of Beauchief Gardens

Today Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat Sheffield Hallam MP, pitched in to help local environmental volunteers at a Sheffield beauty spot.

Nick Clegg at Beauchief Gardens

Nick and local Lib Dem councillor Colin Ross joined the Friends of Millhouses Park at Beauchief Gardens to help with gardening duties.

The work is part of the Friends on-going commitment to maintain the Gardens, which were donated to the city by the J. G. Graves Trust in 1935 and are situated next to Beauchief Dam.

The level of care had declined up until the 1990s, until the Friends of Millhouses Park stepped in to restore the Gardens.

Nick said:-

“It was a pleasure to help the Friends of Millhouses Park and Park Ranger team at Beauchief Gardens.

“It is easy to take Sheffield’s many green and open spaces for granted. But it is worth remembering that we only have these beauty spots because of volunteer’s hard work right across our City.

“They all deserve our upmost gratitude and there is no better way to show support than getting your hands dirty and joining in.”

John Brighton, Secretary of Friends of Millhouses Park said:-

“We rely on volunteers to carry out our work so it is always great to see people turn out to help at events like this. We hold them throughout the year and I would urge people to come along to have fun and help out.”

Historic Footage of Millhouses Lido with the Spartan Swimmers!

Check out this link to see the old Lido (or Millhouses Pool) way back in 1933/4. That looks REALLY cold! The swimmers are the Sheffield Spartan Swimmers and the link is thanks to the Yorkshire Film Archive via David Cooper.

Himalayan Balsam Bashing!

Come along on the 1st July from 1000-1200 to help the Sheffield Ranger Service eradicate the Himalayan Balsam growing along our river banks!

Himalayan Balsam is an introduced plant which has escaped from gardens and is rapidly colonising river banks and other areas of damp ground. It is an annual plant which grows to about 2m with purplish-pink slipper shaped flowers in June to August. When seed pods are mature, they explode when touched, scattering the seed. It forms dense stands which suppresses the growth of grasses and native British plants leaving the banks bare of vegetation in Autumn and winter liable to erosion. Because Himalayan Balsam re-grows annually from seed, any form of control carried out after the seed pods have formed will have no effect.

Small infestations can be controlled by hand by pulling as the plant is shallow rooted. The seedbank lasts 18 months, so two years control should eradicate the plant. This is our 2nd Year!

Playground Regeneration

From a derelict site of many years the awarding of a Community Spaces grant has transformed the area into the busiest place in the park on probably the busiest day I have ever known it.

The Gym, the Cycle Park and Oaks plus a sustainability grant from Community Spaces for Milly Jam has seen a fantastic day, adopted by the SW Community Assembly and supported by our PCSO. Totally transformed with a cross section of ages and backgrounds … One of the best projects we have achieved to date. About 1000 people in one area at one time is quite an achievement within 6 months of the project finishing.

Congratulations to all those involved Kate, Geoff & Cath, Toby and Carolyn, Tammy & Matthew, Nicola ……. Brilliant, just brilliant and thanks on behalf of everyone in the community who has benefitted from your labour.

Please pass on my admiration to the guy on the microphone, how he kept going so long, I will never know.

John Brighton, Friends of Millhouses Park Secretary
