What’s On? Dates For Your Diary!

Millhouses Park is BUSY this spring – just check out all the events taking place!

SPLASH! Waterplay is now Re-Opened!

Saturday 19th April – The Birds of Springwood

A chance to look for and listen to the breeding birds in Springwood. The morning should produce over 20 species and we’ll look to see if there’s activity around the nest boxes that we’ve put up there in the last 18 months. Meet at the entrance towards the bottom of Hastings Road at 8 o’clock. We’ll give it an hour or so to see what’s around. Wear suitable footwear. It could be muddy in places.

Tuesday 22nd April – Willow Den Maintenance

Tom Tay will be in the park pruning and reweaving the Willow Domes from 10am for about 3 hours.

Saturday 26th April – The Birds of Millhouses

Our now regular spring bird watching walk through Millhouses Park and back through Ecclesall Woods via the heronry. Meet at the foot of the stairs into the Park from Archer Road at 8 o’clock. The leisurely walk should last about two and a half hours.

Sunday 11th May – River Clean and Litter Pick

All health and safety, risk assessment and tools and equipment will be the responsibility of the Rangers. We are starting at 10.30 am and will go on no later than 2.30 pm. We will meet at the cafe at 10.15 am.

With reducing park maintenance we are looking for self arranging individuals or small gardening groups to adopt a flower bed and keep it tidy throughout the season – any offers to keep our park looking good?

Saturday 17th May – Milly Jam

The Annual Milly Jam competition with all the usual excitement and passion! Bring the family to experience a magnificent spectacle!

Monday 19th May – Bench Renovation

Funding is in place for the 10 year life extension renovation as is an agreement for Sheffield Council to provide new safety matting over the full area.

BT Staff and Sheffield Council Rangers last year renovated four Park Benches for parents to sit on round this piece of equipment and another “Away Day” is being arranged with the same team for Monday 19th May down at our Small Mill Building. This will be for another four benches or, we hope, four Picnic Benches from the Abbeydale School site.

Sheffield Council will, after the summer, be replacing parts of the Trim Trail and replacing the bark chippings with something more appropriate.

21st & 22nd June – Cliffhanger and Duck Races

We will be running our usual Duck Races, 100 at a time, throughout the weekend on the Fish Pass during the Cliffhanger Event. Full details of the event will be posted separately closer to the time. Duck races will also take place in the summer so watch this space!

2nd & 3rd July – Eid Festival

Come and join the festivities!

Saturday 19th July – McMillan Extravaganza

More details to follow on this event closer to the time…

Date to be Confirmed – Mill Buildings Open Day

Watch out for an announcement to get your chance to see around the Mill Buildings…

High Hopes For This Year’s Cliffhanger Festival

Adventure seekers with a head for heights will be able to brush shoulders with world champions and record breakers once again at this year’s Cliffhanger festival.

Sports enthusiasts who like to climb high, run fast and swim deep will be able to take part in a host of daredevil activities at the eighth Cliffhanger festival, which is returning to Millhouses Park between 21 and 22 June 2014.
And for the first time, climbers will be able to take part in the Senior British Bouldering Championships at the Climbing Works, which is based 10 minutes away at Woodseats Road and boasts the world’s biggest indoor bouldering wall, while spectators can watch the competition on a big screen in the park.

Councillor Isobel Bowler, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Cliffhanger is an action-packed weekend which showcases Sheffield’s distinctive offer as a city ideally located for adventurous sports. People come from across the UK to take part in the competitions and enjoy the events and activities on offer.
“It’s about inspiring people to test their limits, to try new activities and enjoy the great outdoors in Sheffield and the surrounding area. With the return to Millhouses Park, I’d particularly encourage people who haven’t been before to come and experience Cliffhanger this year.”

Cliffhanger is organised by Sheffield City Council in conjunction with Heason Events who expect more than 12,000 people to attend. As well as have-a-go activities the festival will be packed with demonstrations – everything from climbing to caving and biking to fell-running, orienteering, free running and scuba diving. There will be an orienteering course, trail races and demonstrations.
There will be more cycling attractions at this year’s event to celebrate the Tour de France coming to Sheffield.

Entertainment will also include a beer and wine tent and family-friendly fairground rides.
Event co-organiser Matt Heason said: “With a third of Sheffield’s boundary within the Peak District, the city has always been popular with climbers, mountain bikers, runners and cavers. Cliffhanger is the ideal place for people to come and try these activities out for themselves as well as see sportsmen and women compete at the highest level on our big screens.
“The event offers great value for money with 90 per cent of outdoor activities free of charge once you have paid your entry fee. We want to ensure the event is as affordable and accessible to all that’s why we have reduced the entry fee. People can make a whole weekend of it if they wish, with activities stretching across two days.
“We are delighted to be working with the Climbing Works this year and I’m sure everyone taking part in the competition will love the top-class facilities there.”

Tickets for this year’s event will cost £6 for adults and accompanied children aged under 16 can enter for free.

Mill Buildings Survey – Have Your Say!

Millhouses Corn Mill in Millhouses Park dates back before the 13th century and is now the last corn mill in Sheffield. The mill was donated to the Sheffield City Council and has been used as a depot for the park from 1950.

The restoration work on the mill has now started and this questionnaire survey is to investigate how people feel about the suggestions proposed for the mill to be a historical, educational learning centre for the public.

A team of Masters students from Sheffield Hallam University are working on an exciting project on behalf of Millhouses Park to produce ideas for the use of the Mill.

Please take a few minutes to give us your feedback on our ideas by clicking on the link below:
