Zip Wire Officially Opened by The Lord Mayor of Sheffield

The grand opening of the Millhouses Park Zip Wire was on 5th November. Now children visiting the park have a huge variety of play equipment on the site of the old Lido!

As will all our official openings, the heavens opened and it poured! Did it put us off? No, never and we all enjoyed an hour with a lot of laughs. Our Lord Mayor zipping off down the wire was sporting to say the least … but that is the Sylvia we all know and the Sylvia who has done so much for our Park.

These are just a few pictures taken on the day in dreadful conditions so the quality is not of the best. More will be available from the Star who sent a photographer and reporter to cover the story. These will be loaded up to the website as soon as practical and issued round the whole group. Anyone wanting higher quality pictures please do ask.

Thanks to everyone who turned up, the Pudding Ladies for a lovely spread afterwards, particularly to Kate who found the funds and drove the project through and our partnership working through Miriam (SCC) who delivered the goods.

Oak Tree Planting a Huge Success

Here’s some photos from the planting of our new avenue of Oak Trees to replace the old Poplars which were life-expired and very rotten inside.

The negative Safety Report on the line of Poplars, three years ago, was confirmed when they were felled revealing extensive rot in the centres of several trees.

New Oak Avenue Planting

Thursday 3rd November, 10:30 – 12:30

Holly Barnes, our Community Forestry Development Officer will be at the planting of our new oak avenue!

The old Poplars near the skate park had become fragile and dangerous with the risk of large branches breaking off, particularly in high winds. Once the felling is complete they are being replaced with an avenue of English Oaks either side of the next path along towards the car park.
The Oaks will mature into majestic trees with rugged bark and large spreading crowns. They are native and are traditionally seen in the English Countryside. They are long lived and are important for insects and other wildlife.
The replacement of the old poplars with English Oaks is part of the “Old Playground Regeneration Programme” instigated and funded by FoMP from a Community Spaces grants programme and the Community Assembly and delivered in partnership with Sheffield City Council.

Bird Watch Results

Holding the end of year bird walk at a somewhat earlier date than usual paid dividends. The weather was pleasant and an impressive gathering of over twenty people was rewarded with some good sightings. Highlights among the 29 species encountered included a number of parties of Redwings and Fieldfares flying west or south west over the Park en route from Scandinavia to their winter quarters either in this country or beyond, numerous Jays transporting acorns from Ecclesall Woods to be stashed for the winter in  hiding places throughout the area, a couple of Sparrowhawks passing over and  two or  three  Grey Wagtails giving good views along the river.

In the coming days keep an eye out for more parties of winter thrushes coming over from the north east usually in the first two hours of daylight and look and listen out for skeins of Pink-footed Geese flying south east over the area en route to their North Norfolk wintering grounds.

New Zip Wire Opened!

Our new Zip Wire, conceived and funded by FoMP and delivered by Sheffield City Council, has opened for play this week.

Apart from the fun part of having a Zip Wire one of the things we wanted to see is the co-operation of children waiting their turn and bring back the button for the next person to take their turn.

Today, whilst walking round in the late summer sunshine these shots were captured of just these things happening. Success and congratulations to everyone involved!

Family Outdoor Gym!

Two years ago, when we set about our Old Playground Regenerations Scheme, we planned to install a new Family Gym. This was opened as the summer holidays set in and there has not been a day or time that we have visited the park where the gym has not been in use – so much so that adults complained about not being able to get on for the children and young teenagers!

Now that the schools have gone back, and the park is a little less crowded, it was good to see the gym being used seriously by the whole range of people we were aiming to attract. This set of pictures demonstrates this admirably. Late September Sunshine and the park at its best!

Very soon the next phase of the redevelopment will be the felling of the life expired tall line of Poplars, which we are paying for as well as a replacement new avenue of English Oak on the adjacent footpath. Once this is done then a new kiddies undulating roadway will be built, on the old playground site, which, together with new posts, signs etc. will complete a £50k spend of monies raised by us and delivered by Sheffield City Council.

What a difference there is!
