Cycle Stands in Millhouses Park
Two cycle stands are proposed at the entrance to the Children’s Play Area!
These stands have been requested and hopefully will be installed before the end of March – so keep your eyes open!

Wassail a Huge Success
Thank you to all who came to the Wassail on Saturday at the Waggon and Horses! It was a roaring success and those who attempted the quiz were certainly tested!
The food was delicious and with all hands on deck to serve the thirsty punters and feed the hungry we had over 160 people attend!

Millhouses fundraisers go Wassailing!
A fundraising drive to bring a 1,000 year old site in Millhouses back to life will help kick off 2013 with a special Christmas and New Year tradition.
A Wassail event, which will take place at the Waggon and Horses pub on 5 January, is being organised by Friends of Millhouses Park and will raise money for the restoration of the park’s historic mill buildings.
As part of the Wassail, which is traditionally celebrated on the Twelfth Night of Christmas, a pub quiz will be held and hot food will be served by W.L Leisure managed Waggon and Horses.
A mill has been on the site in Millhouses for more than 1,000 years and the area, one of the oldest suburbs in Sheffield, was originally named after the corn mill. The mill has been the story of how Sheffield fed itself, first with water power taken from the River Sheaf in Millhouses Park and later by steam, ultimately ceasing work in the 1930s.
The Friends of Millhouses Park, in association with Sheffield City Council, is working to bring the well-known buildings back into use and has secured nearly £130,000 to kick-start the development.
Work has already started on the small building to make it secure after a four year battle by Friends of Millhouses Park to save it from destruction.
However, the group needs to raise a further £9,000 to ensure that all the funding is in place to make the small building weather proof, energy self sufficient, and enable it to take a large step towards the whole being available for use by the community, with a protected courtyard area also planned for the exterior.
Simon Argall, from W.L Leisure, which also owns the Millhouses Pub on Abbeydale Road, said: “We are delighted to support this event and hope that the local community come together to help raise vital funds for the works on the mill site. It is set to be a great way to kick-start the New Year in Millhouses!”
Jane Bradley, owner of Perfectly Dressed clothing boutique in Millhouses and organiser of the Wassailing event, said: “The idea behind the Wassail was the fact that the traditional festival dates back to Anglo Saxon times around 1,000 years ago and that a mill has been on the Millhouses site for around the same time, so it seemed quite fitting to tie the two together.
“We’d encourage people to come along to this unique fundraising event and support a fantastic local cause.”
John Brighton, secretary of Friends of Millhouses Park, said: “These buildings have huge historical significance to the Millhouses area and we have fought tirelessly to save them from being knocked down.
“Ultimately we hope that, with the support of people within the local area and beyond, we can bring these buildings back to life and start the next part of their history in the Millhouses area.”
The event will feature an auction, with prizes including Sheffield United tickets, family skating sessions at iceSheffield and meal vouchers at a number of local restaurants, and local group the Gamebirds will lead Christmas Carol-led entertainment on the night.
Tickets for the event are priced at £5 for individuals or £15 for a family ticket, which includes two adults and two children.

Work Starts on the Mill Buildings!
Monday 26th November saw the start of work on the small mill building after a 4 year battle to save it from destruction. The first phase of basic structural work should be finished by March 2013. We have been working in Partnership with Sheffield City Council and funding has been provided from the Heritage Lottery Fund; our funders include Sheffield Town Trust, Charles Hayward Foundations, SCC, the S.W. Community Assembly & Big Lottery CSEP Fund.
There has been a mill on the site for about 1000 years with the current building probably on a similar footprint to Sir John Bright’s total restoration of the mill in 1679 for the grand cost of £170! The mill has been the story of how Sheffield fed itself first with water power taken from the River Sheaf by the Skate Park and later by steam. The Mill closed in 1939.
The redundant buildings have been used as a maintenance depot and storage by Sheffield City Council but for the last 6 years have lain mostly abandoned to the elements and decay. The dangers were that the buildings would be sold or fall down so we took up the challenge to save the small mill building, then the whole site by bringing it into productive use.
Currently we are £9.2k short of what we need to finish this phase and have a building where we can attract a commercial user and gain community use. Period doors, windows, stairs, under-floor heating, wall pointing and fitting out remain to be done and we are working with the community to achieve these goals. Additionally we need to clear the space round the building to achieve a small but protected entrance and courtyard.

“Wassail” in the Wagon and Horses – 5th January 2013
Following on from the fashion show success we will be running a wassailing evening at the Waggon & Horses from 7.30 pm on Saturday 5th January 2013. There will be a specially written pub quiz and an auction with some super items, many donated by local businesses. A local group, The Gamebirds, will lead the “Sheffield Carol” style entertainment throughout the evening. Excellent hot food will be served and included with the ticket price of £5. Jane Bradley, of Perfectly Dressed, Millhouses, will again be leading the evening. 120 tickets will be available for seating throughout the pub; a family ticket at £15 will also be available. Come along, support the Community Mill Building and have a good sing and darn good evening before returning to work again. Watch out for ticket sales shortly.

Millhouses Park – The Heart Walk
A project led by Rotary Club of Sheffield Vulcan in association with FofMP.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust arranges cardiac rehabilitation exercise for patients who have had either cardiac surgery or cardiac intervention (angioplasty). Exercise sessions are arranged at different sports centres, under the supervision of a cardiac nurse & physiotherapist, but patients are encouraged to continue with exercise in between the sessions, and after they have finished.
Millhouses Park’s facilities for walking/jogging on flat terrain are ideal. We have measured the park’s paths, & decided that we need 25 green oak posts, to each of which will be attached a plaque with a consecutive number, the ordnance survey reference, distance and direction to the next markers. The QR readers will access the websites of both Friends of Millhouses Park & the Rotary Club. The other symbol is for orienteerers, who have also shown an interest in the project.
Fashion Show a HUGE Success!
The Fashion Show held on the evening of 1st November 2012 to raise money for the Mill Building was organised by Jane Bradley, owner of Perfectly Dressed in Millhouses, to raise money for the Mill Building and far exceeded our expectations. We anticipated 50 people but in the end we had 107 people enjoying an excellent evening, good food and all the enjoyment of the TV programme “Come on Down” for the raffle. £800 was raised on the night and it is with a huge thanks to Jane for her efforts!
